1.Interpretative Proof for the Existence of God
1.1.Standards exist that aid in interpretation.
How can you interpret the facts unless you already know beforehand at some level what is true? Our ultimate standards or presuppositions form what is known as a worldview. A worldview may be defined as “a network of presuppositions which are not tested by natural science and in terms of which all experience is related and interpreted”. Everyone has a worldview, even if you do not know it. This explains much of what we see in the world today and the divisive political climate we live in.
1.2.All standards other than God come from the mind of man.
If Christianity is true, then Christians standards comes from God as written in the Bible. On the other hand, if Christianity is false, then standards come from the mind of man. To see this let’s take a look at an example. Do no harm is a common standard in the unbelieving world. But “Do no harm” is not an intelligent being that communicates to anyone. Therefore this standard comes from the mind of man and leads to subjectivity. So Christianity makes objectivity possible whereas anything else yield subjectivity.
1.3.Some things are undoubtedly true.
An example will suffice here. “Torturing babies for fun is wrong”. Anyone who denies this is a sociopath. Claiming that evolution has lead to certain behaviors that preserve the species does not help here. After all, if its just evolution then it’s not a moral ought it’s just a historical fact. So what, let the species go extinct. At this point the unbeliever is outraged. In other words, contrary to the unbelievers espoused beliefs there is an objective moral ought.
1.4.These truths must be communicated to us by a perfect being.
If these truths or presuppositions are not communicated to us then they would necessarily come from our own minds. As we have seen in step three objectivity is certain. Also, since knowledge is not subject to error, otherwise it wouldn’t be knowledge, the being communicating to us must be omniscient. Since everyone knows these certain truths this being must be omnipresent.
1.5.That perfect being is the God of the bible.
The God of the bible is described as omniscient, omnipresent being who condescended to humanity in the form of Jesus Christ. The bible further describes what we see today as rebellion and sin, that is why there is so much disagreement on truth. Ever since Satan tempted Eve in the Garden of Eden with “you will be like God, knowing good and evil”, mankind has never stopped being the judge of all things, truth and otherwise. But this leads to utter subjectivity. Only Christianity provide the preconditions that make life intelligible.
- Standards exists that aid in interpretation
- All standards other than God come from the mind of man and thus make everything subjective resulting in the absence of truth and knowledge
- There are some things that are undoubtedly true regardless of one’s beliefs
- These truths must be communicated to us by a perfect being otherwise these truths would be subject to interpretation and therefore fallible.
- That perfect being is the God of the bible
